Prepare for your travel clinic appointment with this checklist covering your itinerary, vaccine record, medicines and health history.
Start with your complete itinerary
Travel-health recommendations depend on more than the country name. Bring every destination and transit stop, your departure and return dates, and the amount of time you expect to spend in each place.
Tell the pharmacist about rural travel, visiting friends and relatives, backpacking, animal contact, healthcare work, high-altitude plans or extended stays. Accommodation and planned activities can change the risks that need to be discussed.
Bring your vaccination history
Previous routine and travel vaccinations help avoid unnecessary doses and show whether a booster or another part of a course may be due. Bring paper records, certificates, clear photographs or information available through the NHS App.
If you cannot find your record, do not delay arranging advice. Tell the clinic what you know and ask your GP practice whether it can provide your vaccination history.
List medicines and relevant health information
The person assessing you needs to know about regular and occasional medicines, allergies, previous serious reactions to vaccines, pregnancy, immune conditions and other relevant health history. This information is used to check whether a vaccine or malaria medicine is suitable.
- Names and doses of medicines you take
- Known allergies and previous vaccine reactions
- Long-term conditions or a weakened immune system
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding or planned pregnancy where relevant
Questions worth asking before treatment
Ask which recommendations are essential, optional or related to an entry certificate. Confirm the number of doses, when protection is expected, common side effects and the total likely cost of the proposed course.
Guide prices can be per dose rather than for a complete course. The clinic should confirm stock, suitability and any consultation, prescription or certificate fees before you proceed.
